Kitabi Masti: A Library of Joy and Learning

Kitabi Masti, which translates to “Fun with Books” in Hindi, began as a humble initiative. Muskan started with just 25 books hung on a string outside her house. The colorful images of the books attracted the children in the neighborhood, who soon began visiting her house regularly to read.

As Muskan recalls:

“I was nine years old when I started this library … I had collected some books which I displayed outside my house by hanging them on a rope. The colourful images fascinated the children in the locality. They started visiting my house regularly to read the books. This is how my interest in books started to grow.”Muskan Ahirwar

The dedication and enthusiasm displayed by Muskan Ahirwar quickly caught the attention of others.

Growth and Expansion

In 2017, Muskan was awarded a grant by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to fund the development of the library. With this support, Kitabi Masti was moved to a dedicated space within the colony. The space was creatively renovated using waste materials by architecture students from the National Association of Students of Architecture.

Through contributions from various parts of India, as well as countries like the United States, South Africa, and other nations, the library has grown to house over 3,000 books.

Today, Kitabi Masti continues to provide a place for learning, creativity, and joy for children in the Durganagar worker’s colony.
